| In Japan, the word for buffet is バイキング (バイキング = baikingu = Viking). Some of the Japanese people believe that the word viking is the english word for buffet. But why did they choose Viking as their loan word for buffet? It is because of Teikoku Hotel, a famous high-class Japanese hotel, which gave Buffet the name “Viking” after the 1958 film “The Vikings”. |
We always hear the word “vikings” because it is always being used in the past and nowadays. Even here in the Philippines, there are restaurants which are named after that word and they have eat-all-you-can buffets. Especially when you are in Japan. Maybe you always plan to eat out and have vikings for lunch or dinner. But most of us never knew the reason why buffet in Japan is called “baikingu” or vikings. Now we learned about this cool information on how this word started. An interesting history lesson isnt it?
