Hi this is teacher Annie, I just want to share this simple information about a japanese manner at hot spring with you.
| 脱衣所で着ているすべての服を脱いで、それらをバスタオルと一緒にロッカーに入れます。水着を着ての入浴はほとんどの場所で許されていません。しかし、小さなタオルは持ち歩くことができます。湯につかる時はタオルを入れることはできません。 |
| Take off all your clothes in the changing room and place them into a locker together with your bath towel.Swimming suits are not allowed in most places. However, it is the custom to bring a small towel into the bathing area. When you enter the bath, make sure to put your towel to a place where it won’t get wet. |
One of Japan’s distinctive tradition is having communal or public baths. In such places, people share one bath and everybody has to be naked, an idea called 裸の付き合い hadaka no tsukii-ai or “the naked society” in English. I’ve read that some Japanese find “social importance” in going to public baths- believing that close physical contact leads to emotional closeness, which is termed “skinship”. This practice is really intriguing for some of the foreigners, like me. I do hope to hear more about this from you.
